Ever since I was a teenager I knew that one of my purpose in life was to help others. Also, I knew that one of my strengths is the capacity to connect with others.
Understanding the nature of our behaviors and the way we interpret life became a great challenge. I enrolled in Psychology School with a clear understanding of what I wanted professionally, but never imagined the profound and deep journey that I was about to begin.
My name is Melissa Cary and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of NY. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, stress management and enhancing self esteem. I focus on adolescents and adults who have a desire to participate in therapy.
I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of experience working in schools, hospitals and community centers in a variety of roles. I now specialize in supporting adults dealing with anxiety. My approach is holistic, compassionate and solution focused, which each session thoughtfully tailored to unique needs and concerns
My approach is grounded in the belief that therapy works best not by giving quick fixes, but by creating a space where we can slow down together and get curious about what's underneath the surface; your patterns, your pain, your hopes, and the parts of you that may have been left behind along the way.
I know well that starting therapy can feel formidable and thoroughly overwhelming, and on occasion, the absolute hardest step of all is merely beginning. In spite of that, you are here, and you are actively setting out on your personal journey to heal and reconstruct. I warmly invite the opportunity to communicate with you and learn how I might best help you. My professional style is kind, deeply empathetic, and shared.
I am a native New Yorker and completed my PhD in counseling psychology at Fordham University. I have been in private practice for many years and before that, trained at the Brooklyn VA, NYU, Montefiore, and John Jay College Counseling Center.
My specialties include major life transitions, grief, anxiety, chronic health issues (cancer in particular), relationship difficulties, insomnia, and trauma.
Growing up as an immigrant, I was fortunate to have teachers, mentors, and counselors in my life who made me feel "seen" and "heard" and helped me navigate the nuances of my complex, contradicting dual cultures. Inspired, it led me to officially train to provide "unconditional regard" (safe spaces) for those in similar situations.
